The short answer
Yes. Every electric and plug-in hybrid Audi has a normal 12V battery alongside the high-voltage pack. It powers the locks, lights, screens and the control units that switch the high-voltage system on. When it fails, the car can refuse to wake up even with a fully charged drive battery, and the fix is a 12V replacement.
Why does an electric Audi need a 12V battery?
The high-voltage pack moves the car. Almost everything else runs at 12V, as in any other car: central locking, lights, the MMI, the instrument display and the control units. Those control units also have to be awake before the high-voltage system is allowed to switch on. So a healthy drive battery is no use if the small 12V battery cannot power up the electronics first.
Where is the 12V battery on an e-tron?
On the e-tron and Q8 e-tron the 12V battery is typically an AGM unit at the front of the car, in the under-bonnet area. On the Q4 e-tron it is typically at the front under the bonnet as well. Plug-in hybrids badged TFSI e are different. Their 12V battery position is not the same as on the petrol version of the same model, so we confirm it from the chassis number.
What are the symptoms of a failing 12V battery on an electric Audi?
There is no engine to crank slowly, so the usual warning sign is missing. What you notice is the car's electronics misbehaving, often after it has been parked for some days. The signs below are the ones owners most often describe to us. Any of them alongside a well-charged drive battery points to the 12V side.
- The car does not wake up or will not go into its ready-to-drive state
- Electrical system or 12V battery warnings on the display
- Doors do not respond to the key or the handles
- The MMI and screens stay dark or restart
- Several unrelated warnings appear at the same time
How does the 12V battery stay charged without an alternator?
An electric car has no alternator. The 12V battery is topped up from the high-voltage pack through a converter while the car is switched on or charging. The battery still ages like any other lead-acid battery, and UAE heat ages it faster. A 12V battery that has reached the end of its life will not be saved by a full drive battery.
What about 48V mild hybrid Audis?
These are a different case. The A8 D5, the A6 and A7 C8, and the Q7 and Q8 with six-cylinder and larger engines have a 48V mild hybrid system. That adds a separate 48V lithium-ion battery to the car, but they still have a normal 12V battery too. The 12V one is the battery that gets replaced in a normal battery call-out.
How is the 12V battery replaced on an electric Audi?
The work stays on the 12V side. The high-voltage system and its orange cables are not opened or touched. The old battery comes out, a new one of the same technology and capacity goes in, and the battery is coded to the car with a diagnostic tool where the car requires it. AGM is replaced with AGM.
