Battery coding tells your Audi that a new battery has been fitted, along with its capacity, technology and serial. Most Audis from about 2008 need it. We do it on site with a diagnostic tool in a few minutes. It is included with every battery we fit, and available on its own if another shop skipped it.

What the BEM code is, and what if your battery has none

BEM stands for battery energy management. On original Audi batteries the label carries a code made up of the part number, a manufacturer code and a serial number. Older cars read this as one long value. Newer cars ask for capacity, maker, serial and technology as separate fields.

Aftermarket batteries, including very good ones, often have no BEM sticker. That is not a problem. The adaptation is still carried out by entering the true capacity and technology with a new serial. What matters is that the car knows a different battery is fitted and what kind it is.

Skipping it does not break the car. It means the energy management keeps treating a fresh battery like the worn one it replaced, limiting start-stop and comfort features and charging to the wrong profile. Over time that costs battery life.

What happens during coding

No towing. No workshop. Just this:

On site: 25 to 45 minutes

  1. Connect to the car

A diagnostic tool plugs into the port under the dashboard and opens the battery regulation or gateway control unit, depending on the model.

  2. Enter the new battery data

Capacity in Ah, technology and a serial number are written in. Older cars take this as a single BEM code from the battery label.

  3. Reset the ageing data

The car discards what it had learned about the old battery and starts measuring the new one from zero.

  4. Check and clear

Stored low-voltage faults are cleared and we confirm that charging and start-stop respond as they should.

More answers on the FAQ page

What happens if an Audi battery is not coded?

The car keeps using the old battery's ageing data. Start-stop may stay disabled, comfort features may be limited, and the new battery is not charged to its ideal profile, which can shorten its life.

Can you code a battery that another shop fitted?

Yes. We test the battery, confirm its capacity and type from the label and register it. It usually takes ten to fifteen minutes.

Which Audi models need battery coding?

As a rule, anything with a battery monitor: A4 and A5 from 2008, A6 from 2005, Q5, Q7, A8, and all A3, Q2, Q3 with start-stop, plus every e-tron. Classic models do not.

Is coding the same as registering a battery?

In everyday use, yes. People say coding, registration or adaptation for the same job: telling the energy management about the new battery.
