Depth check
The scratch is checked by eye, by fingernail and with a paint gauge to see which layer it reaches.

Machine polish
Clear coat scratches are cut back and polished until the mark is gone and the gloss is even.

Touch-up
Small chips and thin scratches are filled with colour-matched paint to seal the metal and hide the mark.

Spot repair
Deeper damage is sanded, primed and sprayed in a small area, then blended into the panel.
On an Audi specifically
Audi metallic and pearl-effect colours, such as Daytona Grey, are layered, so a spot repair has to be blended wide to hide the edge. Matt finishes are a special case. They cannot be machine polished, because polishing leaves a shiny patch, so a scratched matt panel usually needs a full respray.

Can a car scratch be polished out?
If your fingernail does not catch in it, the scratch is probably only in the clear coat and can be polished out. If the nail catches, or you see white primer or metal, it needs paint.
How long does scratch repair take?
A polish takes a few hours. Touch-up is similar. A spot repair with primer, colour and clear coat usually needs the car for a day or two so each layer can cure before blending and polishing.
Do I need a police report for a scratch?
For polishing, usually not. For any paintwork on damage from an incident, workshops in the UAE generally ask for a police report. Get one through the Dubai Police app to be safe and send it with your photos.
Will a scratch rust if I leave it?
If it reaches bare steel, yes, and coastal humidity speeds it up. Aluminium and plastic panels do not rust the same way, but paint will lift around the damage. Seal deep scratches early with a touch-up at least.
