On an Audi specifically
The tiptronic in models such as the Q7, Q8 and A8 is an 8-speed torque-converter automatic made by ZF. Its fluid level is set at a specific fluid temperature, read through diagnostics, so it cannot be checked by eye. An overdue fluid and filter service is behind many shift complaints on higher-mileage cars.

Does an Audi automatic transmission need a fluid change?
Yes, in practice. ZF, which builds the 8-speed tiptronic, recommends fluid changes, and Gulf heat and traffic age fluid faster. If your car is past mid-life and the fluid has never been changed, ask for a check.
What is the difference between tiptronic and S tronic?
Tiptronic is a conventional automatic with a torque converter, fitted to many larger Audi models. S tronic is a dual-clutch gearbox. They fail in different ways and need different repairs, so tell us which one your car has.
Why does my automatic shudder at steady speed?
Shudder under light throttle at cruising speed is often the torque converter lock-up clutch slipping on worn fluid. A fluid and filter service can cure it if caught early. Left for long, the converter itself needs repair.
Is a transmission flush safe on a high-mileage car?
A normal drain, new filter and refill with the correct fluid is safe and is what the gearbox maker describes. Aggressive machine flushes with cleaning additives are a different thing and we do not recommend them.
